Construction tech firm BuildPass has raised $7.5 million in Seed funding to expand its operations in the U.S. market. The funding round was led by Sydney-based venture capital firm Carthona Capital and included investments from Saniel Ventures, GitHub founder Tom Preston-Werner’s fund, Recursive Ventures, Horizon VC, and Massive Tech Ventures.
The capital will support BuildPass’s product development efforts in artificial intelligence (AI), aimed at enhancing productivity across construction site operations, safety, and quality management.
Founded in 2021, BuildPass previously raised $1 million and has since focused on strengthening its presence among small to medium-sized and mid-market construction companies, which make up nearly 98% of Australia’s construction sector.
According to cofounder and CEO Matt Perrott, the funds will not only aid BuildPass’s entry into new markets but will also allow it to expand its technology offerings to construction professionals in Australia.
“The recent investment underscores confidence in the sector’s potential for digital innovation,” Perrott noted, emphasizing that smaller tech firms are leading advances in construction AI. This funding, he added, will further strengthen the development of a streamlined, AI-based construction management platform that combines safety, quality assurance, and site operations.
BuildPass’s platform integrates multiple management tools, allowing construction workers to access safety protocols, quality assurance guidelines, site and equipment management systems through user-friendly mobile and desktop applications.
The firm’s Chief Technology Officer Aaron Vanston highlighted the startup’s recent focus on developing AI-driven modules to improve productivity and reduce digital literacy challenges among construction workers.
“One of our priorities is to close the digital skills gap in the construction workforce,” Vanston explained. “We aim to empower workers by delivering technology that’s accessible and easily deployable without extensive training.”
Using AI from OpenAI and Anthropic, BuildPass has refined its user experience, ensuring it meets the practical needs of the construction sector. Since its inception in late 2021, the platform has expanded to 22 full-time staff and serves over 400 companies across Australia. The startup also received recognition as a co-winner of the Best Newcomer award at the Governor of Victoria Start-Up Awards.
Leigh Jasper, CEO of Saniel Ventures and cofounder of construction software company Aconex, sees BuildPass as positioned to fill a significant gap in the industry.
“Small and mid-sized construction companies have traditionally lacked tailored digital tools,” Jasper said. “BuildPass’s growth trajectory demonstrates the demand for efficient, user-centric solutions in construction tech.”
