Berlin-based Terra One, a startup focused on battery storage solutions, recently announced a successful seed funding round, securing $7.5 million in investment. The funding was led by PT1, an early-stage venture capital firm specializing in real asset technology.
Co-founded by Tony Schumacher, a seasoned entrepreneur, and Thomas Antonioli, formerly of Grover, Terra One is dedicated to supporting Europe’s climate objectives by transitioning away from politically sensitive and non-renewable energy sources.
The urgency for such solutions stems from challenges within the current energy infrastructure. Despite the growth in solar and wind energy installations, the existing electricity grid and storage capacities remain insufficient. In 2023 alone, Germany faced a loss of 19 terawatt hours of energy due to inefficient grid management, enough to power six million households. Without interventions, these figures are projected to rise as renewable energy adoption increases.
Terra One addresses these challenges through its decentralized battery storage projects. These projects strategically charge during peak renewable energy periods when prices are low and discharge during peak demand times when conventional power generation would typically be required, thus reducing strain on the grid and optimizing energy usage.
The company’s largest approved battery projects are capable of powering a city of 100,000 residents for up to six hours. Terra One boasts a pipeline of 300 projects with over 20 Gigawatt hours (GWh) in capacity, equivalent to a substantial reduction in oil consumption for electricity generation.
Notable investors in this funding round include neosfer and 468 Capital, showing continued confidence in Terra One’s mission and potential impact on the energy sector.
Co-founder Thomas Antonioli expressed enthusiasm about the funding, emphasizing its significance in advancing Terra One’s vision of becoming Europe’s premier battery optimizer and contributing significantly to climate goals. The funds will primarily support team expansion and further development of Terra One’s innovative battery optimization software and project portfolio.
