The UK government has announced the adoption of a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool designed to digitise planning documents and reduce delays in housing development.
The tool, called “Extract,” was introduced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer during London Tech Week. Developed in collaboration with Google, Extract is aimed at streamlining the workflow for planning officers and local councils. It is expected to support the delivery of approximately 1.5 million homes over the next few years.
According to an official statement, the tool is part of broader efforts to modernise the country’s planning infrastructure. Local authorities currently spend an estimated £59.4 million annually on digital planning and housing platforms. The integration of Extract is projected to generate annual savings of around £527 million in time and administrative costs for the public sector.
The government plans to extend the tool’s capabilities to cover all planning documents by the end of 2026, enabling more efficient decision-making at the local level.
This initiative aligns with the administration’s ongoing digital transformation agenda in public services, with housing development positioned as a key priority for the coming year.
