In the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Alexander Stepura found himself grappling with the challenge of accommodating his staff in Kyiv, with 70% of them having fled the capital. What began as a personal struggle soon evolved into a business endeavor, giving rise to HOMErs, a startup specializing in modular homes. Recently, the company secured €500k in funding from a network of angel investors.
The genesis of HOMErs traces back to a pivotal moment when one of Stepura’s software engineers, rendered homeless by the conflict, sought assistance. This incident propelled Stepura and his team into action, prompting them to explore solutions to the housing crisis gripping Ukraine.
While the initial focus was on providing emergency shelter, HOMErs recognized the broader applicability of its offerings. The company’s modular homes, constructed from galvanized steel, offer durability and flexibility unparalleled in the market. Moreover, with a modular Lego-like design, these homes can be swiftly assembled, disassembled, and transported, catering to diverse user needs.
Far from being utilitarian, HOMErs’ residences boast aesthetic appeal, resembling high-end villas rather than mere temporary accommodations. This blend of functionality and elegance sets them apart in the modular housing landscape.
Having already erected 80 modular homes primarily in and around Kyiv, HOMErs is poised for expansion. The recent funding infusion will bolster efforts to scale production, with a new factory in Slovakia coming online to meet growing demand. The company aims to manufacture up to 100 houses this year, with plans to double output by 2025 and reach a target of 1000 houses annually within five years.
Beyond addressing immediate housing needs, HOMErs aspires to contribute to the global housing solution. With inquiries from local councils regarding the suitability of its modules for social housing, the company sees potential to make a significant impact on affordable housing worldwide.
From small, fully furnished units priced at $20k to more elaborate villa-like configurations costing €70k, HOMErs offers a range of options to cater to varying budgets and preferences. Yet, amidst its commercial aspirations, the company remains steadfast in its commitment to Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction efforts.
As cofounder Chris Baxter notes, “As soon as there’s some resolution to the conflict, reallocating resources toward reconstruction will be crucial. Having fast, comfortable living solutions will be vital for repopulating the country and rebuilding society.”
