1848 Ventures, a U.S.-based venture studio focused on AI-driven SaaS products for small and medium-sized businesses, has led a $3 million seed round in Propel People, a digital hiring platform for the construction industry. The company has also appointed Dexter Bachelder, a seasoned executive in construction technology, as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Addressing labor shortages in construction

Propel People was developed within 1848 Ventures to respond to a growing concern in the construction sector: a persistent shortage of skilled tradespeople. With nearly 94% of contractors reporting hiring difficulties and an estimated $20 billion in annual losses due to labor shortages, the platform is designed to streamline the recruitment process through automation and mobile-first tools.

The platform supports field-level hiring needs, offering features like AI-driven candidate scoring, real-time screening, and bilingual SMS-based communication. Its ProScore engine ranks applicants based on skill fit, while built-in two-way texting helps contractors connect with candidates quickly and efficiently—especially in mobile-driven environments.

Leadership with experience in construction tech

Newly appointed CEO Dexter Bachelder brings more than 25 years of experience in SaaS, AI, and construction technology. His previous roles include executive leadership positions at Aconex, Command Alkon, Togal.AI, and Slate.AI.

In a statement, Bachelder noted the gap between the demand for labor and the available workforce. "Most hiring tools don’t align with how construction operates—on the move and under time constraints. Propel People is purpose-built for this space, making the hiring process more efficient and accessible," he said.

Plans for expansion

With the new funding, Propel People plans to invest in product development, engineering hires, and go-to-market expansion, targeting high-demand contractor markets across the U.S.

The investment aligns with 1848 Ventures’ broader strategy of building AI-native software ventures aimed at solving pressing challenges for SMBs. Propel People marks another step in the studio’s focus on underserved sectors and digitally lagging workflows.
