Trunk Tools, a startup developing AI tools for the construction industry, has secured $40 million in Series B funding. The round was led by Insight Partners, with participation from Redpoint Ventures, Innovation Endeavors, Stepstone, Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures, and Prudence. This brings the company’s total funding to $70 million.
The funding will be used to grow Trunk Tools’ AI capabilities, expand its team, and scale its platform across more job sites.
Founded in 2021 by Dr. Sarah Buchner, Trunk Tools was designed to address long-standing inefficiencies in the construction sector. The company’s AI platform helps teams extract insights from complex project data—such as blueprints, specifications, schedules, and RFIs—using natural language prompts.
Users can ask questions in plain English and receive accurate, real-time answers sourced from project documents. The platform also uses autonomous agents to handle repeatable workflows, flag potential issues, and align documentation with project timelines.
Buchner brings practical knowledge to her role, having started as a carpenter in Austria before rising through roles in project management. Her experiences on construction sites led her to pursue a PhD in civil engineering and data science. She launched Trunk Tools to build tools that reflect real field conditions and improve decision-making on job sites.
“Construction remains critical to the global economy, but many firms still rely on fragmented systems,” said Buchner. “We developed Trunk Tools to reduce uncertainty and provide AI that understands how construction workflows actually operate.”
Trunk Tools is currently deployed on hundreds of construction projects. The company reports a fivefold increase in revenue over the past six months. Unlike generic document storage tools, Trunk Tools is positioned as an active system that structures documentation, identifies risks, and offers guidance.
According to Jeff Horing, Co-founder and Managing Director at Insight Partners, “AI is now uncovering significant value in construction documentation. Sarah and her team are building domain-specific solutions that are changing how job sites operate.”
The new capital will support product development, hiring across engineering and go-to-market teams, and expanding the company’s field enablement program. Trunk Tools plans to extend its offerings to support both large-scale and long-tail construction projects.
Headquartered in New York City, Trunk Tools develops AI-driven solutions tailored to construction workflows. The company focuses on improving field productivity, reducing waste, and automating time-intensive tasks. It was founded in 2021 by Dr. Sarah Buchner.
Insight Partners is a global software investor supporting high-growth technology and Internet companies.
